Floating pool in Göteborg
In 2007, the first floating pool featuring biological water treatment was designed and subsequently put into operation. Due to its overwhelming popularity among Gothenburg’s residents, the city decided to develop a more advanced and extensive facility. The redesign and planning phase took place between 2021 and 2022, followed by the construction of the new facility from July 2022 to June 2023.
A groundbreaking innovation in this project is the utilization of the saltwater layer beneath the freshwater lens of the Baltic Sea. The newly designed basin features an open bottom, extending deep into this saltwater layer. During operation, the freshwater is actively displaced from the basin, allowing the denser deep water, with a salinity ranging from 10 to 30 g/L, to rise naturally.
As a result, bathers are immersed in a unique experience—a “window into the ocean,” where they can enjoy crystal-clear, pristine water that supports the typical saltwater biocoenosis of the Baltic Sea.
